ESG Reporting Dashboard in Power BI

The ESG Reporting Dashboard in Power BI gives sustainability, finance and investor-relations teams one report for the questions that come up in every ESG review: how much are we investing, how much is reporting costing us, how complete is our data, how many disclosures are actually published, and what is happening to carbon emissions. This walkthrough covers every page of the template, the sample data model behind it, how to load your own numbers, and – just as important – what the report does not do.

A note before you read on: this is an analytics template over sample data. It is not a regulatory reporting system, a disclosure-filing tool or a carbon accounting engine. It does not make anyone compliant with GRI, SASB, TCFD, CSRD or ISSB, it performs no assurance, and nothing it produces is a certified or assured disclosure. Framework, assurance and status are labels you use to slice your own records.

Why Build ESG Reporting in Power BI?

Most ESG data starts life in spreadsheets: a disclosure tracker here, an emissions sheet there, a budget line for reporting costs somewhere else. That works until someone asks for a cut by region, pillar and framework at once. Power BI solves the slicing problem – one model, many views, every number filtering together – and a ready-made report saves the days it takes to design pages, write measures and wire up drillthrough. You bring the disclosure log; the template brings the structure.

Key Features at a Glance

  • Five analysis pages: Overview, Disclosure Trends, Pillars & Frameworks, Emissions & Impact, and Regions & Assurance, plus a Get More Dashboards page.
  • A Details drillthrough page bound to eight fields – Business Unit, Region, ESG Pillar, Reporting Framework, Disclosure Topic, Assurance Level, Reporting Officer and Disclosure Status – that lists matching records in a 13-column table.
  • Two hidden tooltip pages, Metric Detail and Trend Detail, that show extra context on hover.
  • Five KPI cards per page with a month-on-month change (December against November 2025) and a mini monthly trend.
  • Five slicers per page: Date Range, Region, ESG Pillar and Business Unit everywhere, plus one page-specific slicer.
  • 28 named measures used by the visuals, from Total ESG Investment and Compliance Cost Ratio % to Emissions Reduction % and Investment Per Ton Reduced.
  • Scorecards for regional carbon performance and for reporting officers, with in-cell bars and quality stars.

Page-by-Page Walkthrough of the ESG Reporting Dashboard in Power BI

Every figure below is what the report shows when you first open it with the bundled 2025 sample of 500 disclosure records.

Overview

The landing page answers “where do we stand?” in five cards: Total Disclosures 500, ESG Investment $53.80M, Data Completeness 78.8%, Publication Rate 40.4% and Disclosure Quality 3.4 out of 5, drawn as stars. The main chart, Total ESG Investment and Emissions Reduction by Month, pairs monthly spend with the reduction percentage so you can see whether money and results move together. Underneath, Total Disclosures by ESG Pillar shows Environmental carrying 215 of the 500 records (43.0%), and Total ESG Investment by Business Unit ranks Manufacturing first at $11.3M and Facilities last at $3.8M.

Disclosure Trends

This page is about momentum. It adds Data Points 39,477 and Compliance Cost $16.55M to the card row. Total Disclosures and Data Completeness by Month shows completeness rising from 63.0% in January to 90.0% by November – the kind of progress line a reporting lead wants in front of the steering committee. Total ESG Investment by Month traces spend through the year, and ESG Investment and Compliance Cost by Quarter shows investment growing from $8.8M in Q1 to $16.8M in Q4 while compliance cost moves from $3.0M to $5.0M.

Pillars & Frameworks

Here the question is “where does the effort go?”. Cards show a Cost Ratio of 30.8% – compliance cost as a share of ESG investment – and an Audited Rate of 21.6%. ESG Investment and Compliance Cost by ESG Pillar puts Environmental at $23.6M of investment against $7.2M of cost, Social at $18.1M and $5.6M, and Governance at $12.1M and $3.8M. Total Disclosures by Reporting Framework splits the log into GRI (126), SASB (106), TCFD (105), CSRD (96) and ISSB (67). A matrix, Total ESG Investment by ESG Pillar and Reporting Framework, gives the exact dollar figure for every combination.

Emissions & Impact

The carbon page. Cards read 630,169 tCO2e of emissions, 86,547 tonnes reduced, a 13.7% reduction rate and $622 invested per ton cut. Total Carbon Emissions and Investment Per Ton Reduced by Business Unit is the most useful chart in the file for budget conversations: Manufacturing has by far the largest emissions but the cheapest reductions at $422 a tonne, while Corporate HQ pays $1,295. Total Emissions Reduced by Disclosure Topic ranks Waste & Circularity first at 13,159 tonnes, and the Regional Carbon Scorecard lines up all five regions – Europe has the highest emissions (185,411) while Africa posts the best reduction rate at 14.8%.

Regions & Assurance

The last analysis page tracks reporting discipline. Cards show Publication Rate 40.4%, Overdue Rate 9.0%, Audited Rate 21.6% and Disclosure Quality. Total Disclosures and Publication Rate by Region shows North America publishing 47.2% of its disclosures against Asia Pacific’s 33.7%. Total Disclosures by Assurance Level splits the log into Limited (199), Unassured (193) and Audited (108). The Reporting Officer Scorecard compares six fictional officers on disclosures, investment, publication rate and average quality stars.

What This Template Does Not Do

  • It does not calculate emissions. Carbon Emissions and Emissions Reduced are values you supply; there are no emission factors and no Scope 1, 2 or 3 split.
  • It does not check anything against GRI, SASB, TCFD, CSRD or ISSB requirements.
  • It does not perform, record or verify assurance. “Audited” is a label on the record.
  • It has no targets or baseline year, so reduction figures are totals for the period you load, not progress against a goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this make our ESG report compliant with a framework?

No. It is an analytics template. Framework is a label used for grouping, and the report produces no certified or assured disclosure.

How is Data Completeness calculated?

Data Points Collected divided by Data Points Required – 39,477 out of 50,115 in the sample, or 78.8%. It tracks collection progress, not data accuracy.

Is the sample data real?

No. All 500 records and the six reporting officers are fictional.

Do I need a paid Power BI licence?

No. Power BI Desktop is free. You only need Pro or Premium Per User to share the report in a workspace.

Is there an Excel version?

An ESG Reporting Dashboard in Excel is in preparation and is not available yet.

Conclusion

If your ESG data already lives in a spreadsheet, this report turns it into five clear pages – investment and cost, disclosure progress, pillar and framework mix, carbon reduction, and regional reporting discipline – with drillthrough to the records underneath. Use it for internal reviews, board packs and client work, and keep regulatory filing and assurance where they belong, in dedicated systems.
